Which essential oil numbs the skin?

Essential oils can help relieve pain like toothache.

Plant medicines in the form of oils have been around since ancient times. These oils are produced from plant sections such as the leaves, roots, stems, and flowers. In the case of essential oils, the chemical constituents of specific plant species are captured through a process of steam distillation that makes up unique blends. Some of these chemical compounds have analgesic properties and may even be used as natural remedies to help alleviate pain. Certain essential oils numb the skin like Lidocaine and Benzocaine would.

Clove essential oil is a great choice should a throbbing toothache catch you off-guard. It will dull the pain until you are able to schedule a dentist appointment. Chamomile, peppermint, and cinnamon essential oils also have analgesic properties and are great to have in an emergency home kit when dealing to help treat conditions such as earache, infections, and inflammation.

Clove oil (Eugenia Caryophyllata / Syzygium aromaticum)

As an essential oil that numbs the skin, clove is an excellent and first choice for toothache relief. Clove essential oil is produced from the flower buds of the plant Eugenia caryophyllata. A favorite in the fragrance and food industries, clove oil has great medicinal value too. Not only does it have anesthetic properties, but it is also antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and insect repelling. One of the main compounds which give clove its analgesic property is eugenol. It effectively blocks the nerve that signals the brain when there is pain, albeit temporarily. A study has shown eugenol to be as effective as 20% benzocaine. Applied topically it warms up the area first, after which the skin is numbed.

How to use:

  • Pure unadulterated clove oil is very potent. Even diluted, it may still be too strong. If so, diluting it with a little coconut oil is recommended.
  • There are two ways people use clove essential oil to numb skin. For toothache, it can be dabbed inside the mouth where the affected area is or externally on the skin around the jawbone area.
  • Before using clove essential oil to numb skin, make sure you clean the affected area thoroughly. If you are treating a tooth, make sure you brush your teeth first and rinse your mouth with a little saltwater.
  • For oral use, only use a high-quality food-grade essential oil. Most essential oils are only for topical use. Follow the instructions on the bottle.
  • You can apply clove oil 1 to 3 times daily for relief, taking care to avoid contact with the tongue. Only use 1 drop at a time.
  • To remove the taste afterward, you may want to lightly rinse the mouth with a little water afterward.
  • For external applications follow the instructions as set out by the brand for pain relief.
